Relevance of PURNIMA/FULL MOON

Chaitra month is the first month of Hindu lunar calendar; hence Chaitra purnima is the first full moon and is celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti.Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated as Hanuman janam or birth of Lord Hanuman the protector from evil.
Both the Sun and the Moon strongly influence the earth. Moon is the closest astronomical body to our planet, therefore the gravitational force of the Moon on Earth is much more than that of the Sun. On a full moon and new moon the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned in a straight line known as syzygy. On these days the pull of moon on the water bodies amplifies, because the gravity of the sun further reinforces the gravitational force of the moon. Therefore we witness higher tides on these days.
The moon affects a human body physiologically as well as psychologically since a human body consists of approximately 60% water. According to H.H. Mitchell, Journal of Biological Chemistry 158, the brain and heart are composed of 73% water. Depending on the various phases of the moon, the gravitational force exerted on our body varies.
Every matter at a basic level is energy vibrating at a frequency. All celestial bodies affect us with their gross (tangible) and subtle (intangible) aspects. It is important to note that we are not static and our physical body is continuously changing. We are more like a pattern or a process. Cells die and rebuild constantly and we are factually not what we were a few years ago. Everything around us works similarly and Nature is not outside us, we are a part of nature. This aspect was understood in our culture which led to certain significant traditions.
Our scriptures recommend us to ideally observe a fast or take light food avoiding cereals on full moon and new moon day. Observing a fast on Purnima aids in the balancing the metabolic system and cleanses the digestive system. The increased gravitational pull also affects the fluids in our body.
Meditation, introspection and prayer rituals according to one’s faith system aid in mental relaxation leading to control of emotions and empowering actions.
Both Puranmashi and Amavasya(new moon or no moon) are days when the vibrations generated on our planet are very conducive for spiritual growth. Both are days when our energies can be channelized to understand deeper truths of human life and self growth.
Many Eastern spiritual disciplines view the human body as a small universe, as a microcosm. Research says“Nearly all that exists in the macrouniverse is mirrored in a biological cell as a microuniverse. Simply put, the universe can be pictured as a cell.” – Anupama Garg
