Kundalini/Serpent Power
All universal faculties are concentrated as the force of life inside a human body and the condensed form of the same vital force is known as 'Kundalini Shakti'. It is the potential energy inherent in a human being and remains dormant at the base of the spine just like the coil of a snake, hence termed as 'Kundalini Shakti' or the 'Serpent Power'.
When Kundalini rises it is essentially connecting the male and female energies within an individual human form and simultaneously connecting the individual with the Divine consciousness. There are many forms of energy practice which can bring about a Kundalini awakening and it is a very individual and subjective experience.
Ancient traditions believe that the entire universe is a manifestation of pure consciousness.
In manifesting the universe, this pure consciousness divides into two aspects, which are interdependent. One aspect, Shiva, is masculine, static and unmanifested consciousness. The other aspect, Shakti, is feminine, creative, dynamic energy and all form is born from her.
A human being is believed to be a miniature universe. All that is found in the cosmos can be found within each individual, and the same principles that apply to the universe apply in the case of an individual being.
In human beings, Shakti, the feminine aspect is called Kundalini. This potential energy is said to rest at the base of the spinal cord.
The object of Kundalini-yoga is to awaken this cosmic energy and make it ascend through the psychic centers, the chakras that lie along the axis of the spine as consciousness potentials. As she ascends she unites above the crown of the head with Shiva, the pure consciousness.
It is a resolution of duality into unity, a fusion with the Absolute.
