Mantra
The Sanskrit word mantra literally means instrument of thought. They are sounds, syllables, words or groups of words that are repeated with the goal of creating a positive transformation within the person. Mantra recitation descended from ancient sages of India.
Any sound/word produces a vibration and Mantras are energy-based sounds. Mantras are recited for spiritual transformation, to change circumstances or healing. The Indian metaphysical tradition explains that mantras are specially formulated to carry a certain vibration hence faith, proper pronunciation (silent or loud) and intonation is important. If the actual vibration is combined with a strong mental intention, the vibration then contains an additional mental component which influences the result of chanting it.
Aum/Om is considered to be the most fundamental and powerful mantra, and thus is prefixed and suffixed to all Hindu mantras. According to ancient hindu traditions, the vibration of "OM" symbolizes the absolute reality and embraces all that exists. The mantra "OM" is the vibration of the Supreme.
When taken letter by letter, A-U-M represents the divine energy (Shakti) united in its three elementary aspects:
Bhrahma Shakti (creation), Vishnu Shakti (preservation) and Shiva Shakti (liberation, and/or destruction).
